The Young Investigators' Meeting (February 24-28,2009) Empty The Young Investigators' Meeting (February 24-28,2009)

Post by Admin Fri Jan 02, 2009 12:04 pm

Hello friends,

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Estuary Island, this unique
meeting will bring together 40 of the best young life science
researchers from around India to meet one another, as well as to
interact with renowned international and Indian scientists, science
policy makers, and entrepreneurs in biotechnology. The meeting will
feature stimulating scientific talks and posters, with a unique focus
on mentorship, as senior scientists share their experiences and lead
panel discussions on strategies for scientific success. Through this
format, we hope young investigators will make new scientific
connections, and gain perspectives that will help them succeed in the
early phase of their careers.

Scheduled Date- February 24-28,2009

Location- Estuary Island Resort (http://www.estuaryisland.com/) in
Poovar, Kerala

Overall structure:

The core audience of the meeting will be ~40 young Indian researchers
at the start of their careers (<7 years) in academic centers
throughout India; they will have the opportunity to attend talks,
contribute to panel discussions, and share their work at poster
sessions (so that they can meet each other and also find new
collaborations within India).
Senior and mid-level international and Indian scientists will be
invited as mentors. They will give talks that will describe their
science, but also focus on how their careers developed and how
discoveries were made. Senior government officials will be invited to
speak and lead discussions about India’s science policy and funding.
Representatives from the biotechnology sector also will be invited to
provide their perspectives of the future. All of these individuals
will lead panel discussions on the following topics:

Picking problems for a young lab.
Writing and obtaining grants.
Biotechnology growth and relations with academia
Educating a new generation of scientists
Two more topics on running laboratories will be selected by vote by
the young investigators at the meeting.

About 20 post-doctoral researchers will be invited, so that they can
learn about the future of biological sciences and hopefully be enticed
to launch careers in India. They will give short research talks and
posters.

There will also be plenty of time for free and unstructured exchange
of ideas during breaks, social events, and fun excursions.
